Botswana Kanye Households People Lands Cattle-post Crafts

Garden

In Kanye many people grew vegetables and fruit trees in their gardens especially during the Rainy season. However a protective fence was needed as cattle freely roamed the village when they were brought in from the cattle posts for e.g. in-spanning to ox wagons, paying bogadi, fines etc.

Popular garden crops were maize, pumpkins, aubergines, tomatoes, chillis etc. Fruit trees were mainly peaches, mulberry and grape vines. Although lemons and oranges could thrive, it was a taboo to plant them in gardens as it was believed it would cause death in the family.

When there is no rain, waste household water is used for watering. Seeds can be bought from local stores and fruit trees from the Nursery project by the dam
